Former Maßendorf Gravel Pit > a geotope (excerpt from the Bavarian Environmental Atlas)
In the former gravel pit, northern full gravel (alternating sequence of gravel and sand) with isolated marl layers is found. The outcrop wall exhibits sedimentation structures such as gullies, diagonal bedding, and erosion unconformities. Approximately 6-7 m above the floor, a striking calcareous marl horizon extends across the entire pit wall. In a marl lens, which is likely located just below the lowest accessible pit floor, in addition to a species-poor flora, the remains of a diverse small mammal fauna, as well as fish, mussels, turtles, and crocodiles, were found.
