The mountain meadows are usually always beautiful to look at. They are an indispensable part of the Thuringian Rennsteig region.

In addition to clear mountain streams and deep, mysterious mountain forests, nature in the Thuringian Forest is particularly attractive with its colorful mountain meadows. However, these do not have a natural origin, but are the result of the settlement of the mountains more than 1000 years ago. At that time, the forest was cleared, fields were planted and cattle were herded in the forest. The first settlements were built, roads were built and railway tracks were laid. The forest grazing that was common at the time eventually led to overuse of the forests, so meadows were created that were then cultivated. Different plants and animals settled depending on the location, nutrient content, moisture and type of use, and different types of meadows emerged that can only be preserved through use.

Here from the main street between the town of Altendambach and the Wolfsgarten, the Altendambacher Höh, you have a beautiful view of the mountain meadows that bloom beautifully in the summer months. Visually you could confuse it with the Allgäu.
