The promenade represents an enormous space from which it is possible to admire the entrance to the Old Port, the Palais du Pharo, Fort Saint Nicolas, Notre Dame de la Garde, Fort Saint-Jean, the Mucem, the Villa Méditerranée, the Cathedral of La Majeure and the eastern dock, often used as a mooring place by cruises or ferries.
The place regularly hosts music festivals and circuses and is coveted by Marseille residents to watch the sunsets or just to relax watching the sailboats returning to the Old Port.
The "swimming pool" adjoining the promenade in front of Fort Saint Jean is currently prohibited for swimming but from summer 2024 should be transformed into a designated swimming area.
