The impressive fortress was built at its current location in the 13th century. In the 17th century, the castle lords moved into their new castle, so that the castle fell into ruin. Since 1955, the Stubenberg family has taken care of the old walls and brought them into their current form. You can visit the castle or - even more exciting - experience it. For example, by stopping off at the knight's cellar for a rustic knight's meal. For a little refreshment in between, the summer tavern or the knight's parlor are ideal. A special highlight is a falconry flight demonstration.

The medieval Oberkapfenberg Castle stands on the castle hill of Kapfenberg.

From up here you have a wonderful view of Kapfenberg and the rest of the area nearby.

There is also a restaurant in the castle.

There is an asphalt road leading up (WARNING: STEEP (not for beginners!!)).

Just a few minutes' walk away is the Loreto Chapel (beautifully decorated with a beautiful view too😉).

Up here you can really relax and recharge your batteries👍.

History:

The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1173 (under the name “Chaffenberch”)

1268 Built at the current location by the Lords of Stubenberg

1550 Expanded into a Renaissance fortress

1740 With the move to the newly built Wieden Castle, the castle began to decay into ruins

1955 Reconstruction of the castle by the Stubenberg family

1992 Purchase by the town of Kapfenberg

Prices:

Adults cost 8 euros

Pensioners, pupils, apprentices, students, military and civil servants cost 7 euros

Children from 5 to 15 years old each cost 5 euros (infants have free entry)

a family with one adult costs 13 euros

a family with two adults costs 21 euros

Oberkapfenberg Castle is a partner of the Steiermark Card (this means that card holders have free entry)

An absolutely beautiful highlight! If you are in Kapfenberg or the surrounding area, you should definitely visit Oberkapfenberg Castle! Shortly after the castle there is a narrow single trail (at the sign "to HTL" down to Kapfenberg. Instead of the asphalt on the road 😏
