Tauranga, which means “calm waters” or “sheltered anchorage,” is a city of just over 131,000 people on the North Island of New Zealand. The port is the largest
of the country and is used primarily for the export of goods such as wood, salt and agricultural products. The Tauranga settlement was built in the 19th century on confiscated Maori land as a military base and long served as a market and supply center for the surrounding area. Tauranga and in particular the adjacent region around Te Puke to the east and
Katikati in the west are New Zealand's largest kiwi growing areas. The kiwi fruit is grown here all year round and then exported all over the world. In addition, tourism is a very important economic sector. Due to its extensive beaches, Tauranga is an attractive and popular destination for water sports enthusiasts.
