The city of Espargos was almost built around the local mountain, the about 107 m high Monte Curral, around. The desert-like landscape is flat all around and flat, as is typical of Sal. The summit of the volcanically created Monte Curral has been leveled. At its peak today is the radar station, which serves to monitor the air traffic, as well as some transmission towers, which supply the island with radio programs and the mobile telephone network. The center is located on the southwestern flank of the mountain. There are u. a. the local church, the market hall and the island administration.
