      The lake, which is now filled by the lake, originated as a bonfires in the last ice age, which mowed in the following millennia with a through-flow bog through southern flowing water. Due to the sea level rise in the context of the Litorina Transgression got the lowland over the brook Jemnitz connection to the open Baltic Sea and a beach lake was created. Storm floods filled up some of the mighty boulder ramparts ("Heiliger Damm") that covered the moor. It formed a mesotrophic shallow lake, whose current surface area is 80 hectares.

      The first human uses have been recorded in the area since 1186 with the founding of the Doberan monastery. The areas surrounding the lake were used as arable and pasture land. In 1867, construction work was carried out for coastal protection. On the Strandwall a dyke was created. The Jemnitz was regulated with a wooden barrage and a ring dike was pulled around the lake.

      In order to avert the imminent silting up of the Conventer lake and to meet the requirements of flood protection, extensive measures were carried out by the State Office for the Environment and Nature (StAUN) in Rostock. These include the construction of a canal connecting the Baltic Sea with Lake Convent, thus ensuring the exchange of water, the replacement of the Jemnitzschleuse and the rehabilitation of the two existing piers. The Jemnitzschleuse and the adjoining dike facilities were built in such a way that the coastline can withstand a flood at 2.8 meters above sea level in case of severe storm surge. Since 1998, approximately 19 million euros have been invested in the coastal section between Heiligendamm and Börgerende for the storm surge protection system Conventer Niederung in the coastal section "Improvement of Agricultural Structure and Coastal Protection". The facilities handed over on 17 August 2006 thus created the conditions for an ecological improvement of the entire Conventer lowland.
