    Johannes Strieder, born in November 1838, lived there in the Striedersmühle with his mother Clara Strieder, born 1815, and his brother Philipp, born in October 1845. In 1859 he had tried to prevent a French looter / deserter from plundering his family's emergency provisions camp in the forest. During the conflict, the Frenchman died in self-defense.

    On the background of the appearance of the Frenchman:
    In 1859, the battles of Magenta on June 4, 1859 and on June 24, 1959 of Solferino between the French army (max. 170,000 men) against the Austrians in Piedmont / Northern Italy.

    It is quite possible that a Frenchman (because a French raider / deserter was regularly named by those involved) could join the military service in the above context, e.g. during the requisition or during the deployment, by evacuation. It is then logical that he fled to relatively close German territory Mosel / Hunsrück and that the above-mentioned emergency case occurred.

    Now why did Johannes just flee to Brazil? There have been crop failures in the Hunsrück since 1857, which meant much less milling yield for the mills, so there too, distress. This explains an o.a. Fight for the probably vital supplies. And also that many Hunsrückers emigrated to Brazil with families in 1845/1846, and later from 1857 to 1862, which lured with relative wealth.

    And so Johannes also emigrated to Brazil via Antwerp. On the crossing he got to know his young wife. Back then, she was only able to acquire land in Posadas / northern Brazil / near Iguazu as a married woman.

        In the Baybach valley, economic life used to be bustling. Numerous mills were in operation there. They got their energy from the stream. Each of the communities involved had one or more farmer's mills in the valley. 32 mills stood from the source in Hausbay to the mouth in Burgen on the Moselle. You will pass the following mills during your dream loop hike in the Upper Baybach valley. Many have been lovingly renovated and are now barely recognizable from the historical photos.
