Because the courier from the Prince Abbot of Fulda arrived too late with the harvest permit, the late harvest was discovered on Johannisberg in 1775.
In contrast to the other Rheingau wineries, for which the time of the grape harvest was prescribed by the communities, the cellar master of Johannisberg once needed a special permit from the Prince Bishop of Fulda, the owner of the castle at the time. In 1775, however, the courier sent with the harvest permit was late.
The monks on Johannisberg waited day after day to start the harvest and had to watch as the grapes on the vines became increasingly affected by rot and shrunk. When the rider finally arrived with the Prince Bishop's harvest permit, the harvest seemed to have been destroyed. Nevertheless, the monks conscientiously collected the apparently spoiled grapes. And the cellar master was soon amazed: the wine from the rotten grapes surpassed everything that had come before in terms of quality. The noble rot that makes it possible for the Rheingau to produce wines of exceptional quality, including berry and dry berry selections, in certain years was discovered. The cellar masters on the Johannisberg deserve credit for recognizing this coincidence and using it to improve the quality of their wines.
