The caravanserai was built in 1229 and expanded in 1278. It can be compared to a modern motel. The caravans on the Silk Road routes had to leave in a caravanserai before sunset. The gates were locked and guards ensured security.
Sultan Han is a large 13th-century Seljuk caravanserai in the town of Sultanhanı in the Aksaray Province of Turkey. It is one of the three monumental caravanserais in the Aksaray area and is located about 40 km (25 mi) west of Aksaray on the road to Konya.
