          The Rhine Tower building is directly adjacent to the customs house and the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. The mighty Rhine Tower also served as a customs tower. Customs were collected and administered there and in the adjacent customs house. The customs house was owned by the Cologne Cathedral Chapter for over 400 years. From March 1855 it was a Franciscan monastery and later it was inhabited by Vincentians. The adjacent Chapel of the Holy Trinity was also built by Franciscans in 1860. The chapel was accessible from the customs house/monastery via the gate superstructure regardless of the weather.

                    "... Friedrich von Saar Werden (* around 1348 in Saar Werden; † April 9, 1414 in Bonn) was Archbishop of Cologne as Friedrich III from 1370 to 1414. Through the support of his great-uncle, Archbishop of Trier Kuno II von Falkenstein, Friedrich von Saar Werden was elected Archbishop of Cologne at the age of 20, which the Pope in Avignon confirmed two years later after some misgivings.Friedrich found the Archdiocese completely plundered by his two predecessors from Brandenburg, Adolf and Engelbert, and had high expectations himself on the occasion of his election Payments to the Curia assured, but with the help of his very wealthy great-uncle Kuno, he managed to clear the Archdiocese of debt within a few years.
                    Frederick of Saar Werden supported Emperor Charles IV and was therefore granted privileges that supported Frederick's rulership. Right at the beginning of his term of office, he successfully suppressed hereditary conflicts in the landed nobility as well as efforts for autonomy in the cities of the archbishopric and thus asserted his sovereign supremacy, which was no longer contested until the end of his reign. However, he was unable to use a conflict within the city of Cologne between the city council and the lay judges over the high courts to renew the position of power in the city that his predecessors had lost. The last dispute, which was also a military one, involving neighboring princes, ended in a compromise in 1377.
                    Frederick was able to expand the territorial holdings of the archbishopric. Even before Frederick took office, Kuno von Falkenstein had acquired the county of Arnsberg as administrator of the archbishopric in 1368. Friedrich was able to secure this acquisition as well as the acquisition of the land of Linn on the Lower Rhine in three feuds against the two count brothers Adolf and Engelbert von der Mark. His work as a territorial ruler can hardly be overestimated, even though this pushed imperial or ecclesiastical political initiatives into the background.

The mighty Rhine Tower from 1388 is particularly worth seeing. But the Judde Tower with its baroque hood and the windmill with its original wooden grinding mechanism from the 17th century are also popular photo motifs, along with the Rhine landing stage and the city walls. True to its historical importance, the "Rhenish Rothenburg" plays an important role in the cultural life of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss today.
