In order to realize the canal, the polders involved had to be united into one water board. In 1870, the Uitwateringswaterschap der Sluis aan de Wielingen was founded for this purpose. In 1872, the discharge lock on the sea side was completed, as well as a waiting lock located more inland. The remaining part was completed in 1874. The works, which were carried out by the government, were transferred to the Uitwateringswaterschap in 1876. The drainage water board in question was merged into the much larger water board in 1942: Het Vrije van Sluis. In 1902, a small harbor was established at the mouth of this canal, from which the hamlet of Cadzand-Haven emerged.
In 1954 a new discharge sluice was added. The substructure of a pumping station had already been provided. This pumping station was completed in 1964.
A pumping station had already been built at the Zwarte Polder in 1928. This pumping station did not fully meet expectations. When the dikes had to be raised to delta height, this meant the end of the pumping station. The surplus water has since been brought to the Cadzand pumping station via a diversion canal, so that the Zwarte-Polder pumping station could be decommissioned in 1971.
