The dam was built to replace the traditional dams on the lower course of the Ter (dams of Ullà, Canet and Colomers) and to increase, with the new construction of two canals, the irrigated area of the lower Ter. However, during the construction of the dam (1970), this project has been stagnant and paralyzed. In 2002 the ACA studied using the dam as a regulation pond for the waters of the Ter.
