Since the Republic of Slovenia's accession to the EU following EU enlargement in 2004 and its accession to the Schengen Agreement on December 21, 2007, the borders have been open again. Numerous cross-border projects offer an opportunity for reconciliation between Austrians and Slovenes.

On January 1, 2013, the district of Radkersburg was merged with the district of Feldbach to form the district of Southeast Styria. The administrative building on the main square in Bad Radkersburg is now used as the administrative building of the Southeast Styria District Administration.

On January 1, 2015, Bad Radkersburg was merged with the municipality of Radkersburg Umgebung as part of the municipal structural reform in Styria. The new municipality bears the name "Bad Radkersburg."

During the Nazi era, the nationality issue was taken to extremes. The result of the Greater German Reich's policies was not only the destruction of the city—only 4 of 321 houses remained undamaged—but also a climate of mistrust that characterized the population on both sides of the border in the period that followed. The violent expulsion and multiple murders of the German-speaking population[6] from the surrounding areas to the right of the Mur (e.g., the Abstall Basin) by Yugoslav partisans after 1945 destroyed relations across the Mur for generations.
