I rode today. If they did some digging a few months ago, there's not much trace of it left. There's very little gravel or rocks, and the surface is exposed, along with all the bumps and potholes. It's actually the first time I've seen this road so "bare." It's also worth remembering that this isn't a dedicated bike route, just a manageable shortcut/detour, where conditions can always change. You won't encounter any sand, though, as the road is well-paved.
