Since 2021, the proportion of heat generated from renewable sources by the Greifswald public utility company has been increasing.
The existing “Jungfernwiese” combined heat and power plant was converted to operation with biomethane in 2021. Since then, this system has produced 15 percent of district heating in a climate-neutral manner, supplying over 5,000 households in Greifswald with emission-free heat.
The Greifswald public utility company decided to decarbonize district heating in its heating strategy in 2018 and has since then been working responsibly and specifically on the continuous reduction of CO2 emissions with the goal of 100% climate-neutral district heating supply by 2035. The transformation process towards a climate-neutral energy supply requires social consensus . And because the heating transition can only be achieved together, we are bringing together all social forces in the “Greifswald District Heating Alliance”. The alliance was founded in June 2023 on the largest solar thermal system in Germany to date behind the thermal power plant.
Greifswald's solar thermal system on Helmshäger Berg is an innovative cogeneration project in Germany. "Innovative" in the sense of the Combined Heat and Power Act (KWKG) includes the combination of a highly efficient cogeneration system with power-to-heat and a heat generator based on renewable energies - in our case - solar thermal energy.
