Berching, the gateway to the Altmühltal Nature Park, is located on the banks of the Main-Danube Canal and the historic Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal. In 1846, King Ludwig built the canal past Berching that was named after him and is still preserved today. Since 1992, Berching has been located directly on the Main-Danube Canal, the major European waterway that connects the North Sea with the Black Sea. The 500-year-old defensive wall with thirteen towers and four gates leads to a closed cityscape that is unique in Bavaria
