Rugaard was founded in 1579 when nobleman Hans Axelsen Arnfeldt bought land from the Crown, including farms in the villages of Attrup, Rosmus, Balle, Hyllested and Rove.
The castle is at the top of a slope down to the lake, N'rresa, with an easterly view of the lake and the Kattegat. The seas that ended after the compaction glass of Ice Age shields are the former sea bays that became lakes when the land stopped after the compaction of Ice Age plates.
