    The Castle of Santa Bárbara is located at the summit of Mount Benacantil, 166 meters above sea level. It is home to one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, from which you can see the bay of Alicante perfectly.
    The lower enclosure dates back to the 18th century and is home to the so-called Revellín del Bon Repós.

      The Castillo de Santa Bárbara is located on the approximately 166m high Benacantil mountain, high above the Mediterranean Sea from which you have a beautiful view of Alicante.
      The castle of Santa Bárbara is more than 1,000 years old, the oldest part dates from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries. The other part of the castle was only built after the Middle Ages.
      This castle was used as a prison until 1962.

        You can get to the castle by elevator from the beach or by car (parking spaces are limited). From the top you have a beautiful view over Alicante, there is a restaurant and a kiosk is also available.

              A beautiful castle with a rich history. Goes back to the time of the Moors. The castle has also undergone an interesting development during that time.

                  Towers over the city and is a great destination on foot (a good 160 meters high) or for a few euros by elevator or taxi. The Santa Barbara Castle dates back to the 11th century and has been expanded or rebuilt several times in the years since.

                    One of the largest castle complexes in Europe in terms of area towers over the city on the 166 meter high Benacantil mountain.                     The highest and oldest part of the castle is called La Torreta and was the location of the Moorish Alcázar.                         Santa Bárbara Castle (Valencian: Castell de Santa Bàrbara, Spanish: Castillo de Santa Bárbara) is a fortification in the center of Alicante, Spain. It stands on Mount Benacantil (166 m).
                        History.
                        Bronze Age, Iberian, and Roman artifacts have been found on the slopes of the mountain, but the origins of the castle date to the 9th century at the time of Muslim control of the Iberian Peninsula, from 711 till 1296. The Arab medieval geographer Al-Idrisi calls this mountain Banu-lQatil, and the toponym may derive from the words pinna (Arabic for "peak") and laqanti, adjectival form of Laqant, the Arabic name for Alicante.
                        On 4 December 1248, the castle was captured by Castilian forces led by Alfonso of Castile. It was named after Saint Barbara, on whose feast day the castle was recaptured from the Arabs. It was conquered by the Aragonese in 1296 during the reign of James II of Aragon, who ordered its reconstruction. Peter IV of Aragon, Charles I of Spain and Philip II of Spain would oversee further reconstructions.
                        The castle was bombarded in 1691 by a French squadron. During the War of the Spanish Succession, it was held by the English for three years. In 1873, it was bombarded, along with the city, by the cantonalistas from the frigate Numancia.

                        From the 18th century the military role of the castle has declined and it was used sometimes as a prison. The castle remained abandoned until 1963, when it was opened to the public. Lifts have been installed inside the mountain (€2.70 charge in 2017 but free for adults aged 65 on production of ID). There are some guided tours at €3 per person and there are refreshments and other amenities at and near the summit. Reasonably fit visitors may also appreciate the exercise of a walk to the top.

                          It's worth going up the castle just for the views that accompany us along the way. I recommend entering from Eret Park. P.S. Admission to the castle is free :)

                              There's an elevator that takes you up for a small fee, but you can also take it down for free. However, the climb and the experience are also worth it on foot.
