In 2014, a tunnel was built east of Akureyri, just a few meters above where the hot pool is currently located. During construction, a controlled explosion caused a massive spill of natural geothermal water in the tunnel, causing major problems and delays for the project. Drilling holes in the tunnel walls to allow the warm water to flow freely into the ocean below proved to be the best solution. In return, a warm river was created, as well as a geothermal pool and a (warm) waterfall!
But be careful - there are only stones at the edge, then it goes straight down into the fjord !!! 🙈
Since the pool still doesn't have an official name, I've given the Icelandic translation Tunnelbecken. 😇
