A really beautiful, old town with lots to discover, which is worth a visit in addition to the trails in the region.

The oldest settlements in the Krems-Stein area were not permanently inhabited. Even in the early Middle Ages, armed conflicts repeatedly drove the settlers away. The latest discoveries of Slavic settlements in Krems and Stein in particular suggest that the Slavs have been settling in the area since the 7th century. With the Battle of Lechfeld in 955, conditions stabilized, and colonization on behalf of Bavarian and Salzburg monasteries and abbeys began to increase. For Krems and Stein, it is certain that from the 10th century onwards, merchant and administrative bases were quickly and continuously built around the Hoher Markt in Krems and the church settlement on the Frauenberg in Stein. The oldest document with the name Krems (orientalis urbs quae dicitur Cremisa) dates from 995. South of the Danube, today's district of Hollenburg is already mentioned in a deed of gift from the year 860.
