The duck pond was created in the early 1920s in the northern part of the city park between the jumping garden and the nature theater in a former swamp area. Surrounded by reeds, the water areas offer enough space for the eponymous duck families who make their everyday way through the water lilies. Alders and willows mainly grow on the shore and on the islets. In summer, irises and water thrush decorate the edge of the bank. The reddish-brown bald cypresses are particularly beautiful in autumn.
At the narrowest point of the two ponds a bridge leads over the water. On the “Bastion” in the north there is a small observation station with a permanently installed blue telescope that can be used free of charge to observe animals in and around the water. In the south there is a large wooden heart, the “kissing corner”. Both remaining elements of a project carried out in 2003 to set up a nature adventure area for children and young people. In order to draw attention to the often hidden ecological qualities of this place, the city park association and NABU carried out the hands-on campaign “Ecology in the City Park” in the anniversary year of 2014. Together with committed citizens, they want to further develop the natural areas in the city park. It's hard to guess from the bridge: if you continue along the path to the northwest, you'll come to a large, hidden open area. The jumping garden, a riding arena where tournaments were also held, was originally located here. After the riding arena was abandoned, part of it was converted into a lawn for sunbathing, while the "duck pond biotope" was created in the rear area. Today, when the weather is nice, young people and those young at heart meet on the lawn.
