      The development of fruit growing in South Tyrol
      South Tyrol, the largest contiguous fruit-growing area in Europe, produces around one million tons of apples a year. Every tenth apple in the EU-28 is produced in South Tyrol, 55% of the value added in South Tyrol's agriculture can be traced back to apple cultivation, and the apple is South Tyrol's most important export product. The success of apple growing is based on several pillars, including agricultural and fruit-growing education and training, which is analyzed in detail in this work.
      In 1874, the 'Istituto Agrario e Stazione Sperimentale' was opened as the all-Tyrol teaching and research institute in St. Michael an der Adige. The first technical school for agriculture in South Tyrol was founded in Sterzing in 1909 (later relocated to Dietenheim near Bruneck), but the German-language agricultural training in South Tyrol collapsed with the First World War and could only be rebuilt after the Second World War. The technical school in Dietenheim near Bruneck is continued, 1952 today's technical school for agriculture and forestry Fürstenburg, 1962 today's technical school for fruit, wine and horticulture Laimburg and 1978 today's technical school for agriculture and home economics Salern founded. Increasing numbers of students prove the success of this training. Finally, in 1980, the Agricultural High School was founded in Auer near Bozen, and in 1999 a bachelor's degree in agricultural technology and economics was started at the Free University of Bozen. Today, agricultural training in South Tyrol covers the entire school spectrum - from technical college to university doctoral studies.
