Dysert O'Dea has its own charm that makes exploring by bike something special. The ruins are a little off the beaten track, which gives the place an almost untouched atmosphere. The castle, with its massive 15th century tower house, rises on a rocky outcrop - it's hard to imagine how it once dominated the centre of the O'Dea clan. In the shadow of the round tower and the finely decorated high cross, you can almost feel the long history.
The surroundings invite you to take a short break, especially at the picnic table at the foot of the tower - perfect for letting your gaze wander over the green hills and the old stone walls. Out here, away from the main traffic, the flair of old Ireland can be experienced much more intensely. The condition of the ruins may not be pristine, but that is precisely what makes them so attractive - a touch of decay that brings history to life.
