The local group of Friends of Nature in Pfungstadt was founded in 1948. When the founders decided to set up a Friends of Nature group, it was about creating a conscious counterpart to what they had experienced in the past few years of Nazi rule. The local group developed quickly and the question arose, "Where should the Friends of Nature go?"
At the urging of the board of directors, the city offered the newly founded association a former shooting range of the SA for long-term lease. The building, a squat barracks, was erected in forced labor by the politically persecuted, outside in the midst of pine trees on a sand dune near the moor.
It was a strange feeling for the founding fathers of the Pfungstadt Friends of Nature to be discussing freedom and peace in a house where Nazis had come and gone before.
But the sleeves were rolled up and the Moorhaus was built with a lot of diligence, fun and commitment. In several phases and most recently in 1990, the house was expanded, modernized and completely redesigned. Today there is a lounge, a self-catering kitchen, 25 beds in 5 rooms, a group room with a small kitchen that can be rented inexpensively to groups from schools, sports clubs, kindergartens, students or families, etc. There are 2 additional club rooms available for your own club work.
A large outdoor area, nestled in the sand dunes, with a terrace, children's playground, soccer field, meadow, courtyard, shed with an open barbecue area completes the nature lovers' facility.
The house is only open to the public once a month. Every last Wednesday of the month there is an "open terrace" beer garden from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Further information: naturfreunde-pfungstadt.de

Looks cozy and inviting from the outside, unfortunately only open for refreshments once a month, see information above. But it's certainly worth it in summer, as the house is quite well located and you can also go for a short walk from there.
