At the forest car park between Lauenberg and Fredelsloh there are always two charcoal kilns smoking where you can experience the old tradition of Solling live.
The four charcoal burners Rolf and Peter Hüholt, Werner Grewe and Walter Gehrke from Lauenberg stack around 80 cubic meters of beech wood into two kilns at the coal yard near the charcoal hut and produce charcoal in the traditional way. The two piles are sealed all around with oat straw and earth. Inside, in the absence of air and at a temperature of around 280 degrees Celsius, the logs slowly char into charcoal.
