The Dunas de Mira, Gândara and Gafanhas area has an extensive network of roads and forest paths that are part of a remarkable feat of forestry engineering in Portugal. These paths are mainly used for forest management, but are also popular for ecotourism, hiking, cycling and nature observation.
Access and Routes
Mapped Routes: There are several mapped trails and routes that use these roads and paths, such as the "Rota das Dunas" (PR5 MIR), which is circular and bidirectional, combining dune paths, forest paths and cycle paths. AllTrails and Wikiloc are great tools for finding detailed maps and directions for these trails.
Car Accessibility: Although there are forest roads, it is important to note that many of them are rural and dune paths, with access that may be limited or unsuitable for regular vehicles, depending on weather conditions and maintenance. The main use is for hiking and cycling.
Starting Point: A good starting point for exploring the area is the Gândara Territory Museum in Mira, which provides context on the creation and importance of the forest. Another point of reference is the Poço da Cruz Forestry House.
