Berghaus Splügenpass at 2035 m above sea level
The Berghaus Splügenpass is located at 2035 m above sea level, just a few meters from the Italian border. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century, when 400 to 500 pack animals and also carriages and wagons crossed the pass every week.
For a long time, the Splügenpass was the most frequently used Alpine pass in Graubünden. It was not until the end of the 19th century that its importance rapidly declined. With the construction of the railway and road connections over the Brenner and through the Gotthard and San Bernardino, the Splügenpass lost importance.
The Splügenpass was already an important Alpine crossing in Roman times. The old mule track, which today leads from Thusis to Chiavenna as the historic long-distance hiking trail Via Spluga, also dates from this time.
