The picturesque Scheldt village of Lillo-Fort has a turbulent history. The village itself is centuries old: in 840 there was already mention of the town of Lindelo. But during the Eighty Years' War (1568 - 1648), William of Orange had the famous forts Lillo and Liefkenshoek built on either side of the Scheldt and the village took on a completely different function. The forts had to protect Antwerp against Spanish attacks.

The ramparts and moat of Fort Lillo can still be clearly seen from the air, but with your feet on the ground you imagine yourself in a picturesque village of which today only the houses within the walls of the fort remain.

The picturesque Scheldt village of Lillo-Fort has a turbulent history. As you walk down the jetty towards the village, the old defensive structures become apparent. The village itself is centuries old: as early as 840, the town of Lindelo was mentioned. But during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), William of Orange commissioned the famous forts of Lillo and Liefkenshoek to be built on either side of the Scheldt, and the village took on a completely different function. The forts were intended to protect Antwerp from Spanish attacks.

The ramparts and moat of Fort Lillo are still clearly visible from the air, but with your feet on the ground, you'll feel like you're in a picturesque village where only the houses within the fort walls remain today.

Yet, there are plenty of other things to experience. In the Polder Museum, housed in a former rusk bakery, you and your children can admire nostalgic artifacts. Do you remember what a classroom looked like in the "good old days"? You can find out here. The Kruitmagazijn (powder magazine) also bears witness to the village's history, though today it's mainly an intimate theater.
