There are 34 living seal species worldwide. The harbor seal and the gray seal are particularly widespread in the North Sea. The seal's physique is very well adapted to life in the water. The moving spine and the rear caudal fins enable the animals to move as fast as an arrow in the water. Thick fatty tissue protects the seals from hypothermia during their forays into the North Sea.
