Alt Rehse is a village and district of the town of Penzlin on the western shore of Lake Tollense. As a rare example of village architecture during the Nazi era, the village ensemble is architecturally and historically unique in Germany. The village is of Slavic origin; after the Germanic inhabitants left during the Great Migration Period, the medieval tribes of the Redarii and Tollenser, part of the Wilzen tribal association, lived here. They were later united in the Liutizen League. The name "Rehse" may be derived from the Old Slavic language and mean "place by the water."
