In 2009 we launched the Christian Heritage Centre in a key location near Edinburgh Castle. Since then, we have had over 100,000 visitors from all over the world.

In the centre at St Columba’s Free Church, visitors can browse exhibitions about our spiritual history of the Royal Mile and Edinburgh, with a particular emphasis on Christian history. Videos and exhibition texts are available in over a dozen languages.

The centre opens between June and September, Monday to Friday, 2pm – 5pm and can be found at St Columba’s Free Church, Johnston Terrace, opposite The Hub, EH1 2PW.

Tolbooth Kirk (The Hub) This spectacular Edinburgh landmark was the Assembly Hall for the Church of Scotland. It is situated on the Royal Mile just below the castle. The church fell into disuse in the 1980s and was restored in the late 20th century by restorers who combined traditional Victorian features with bold contemporary features to create The Hub. The Edinburgh International Festival now uses it as a central ticket office and as a venue for concerts and events. There is also a café inside. The Hub is also used for festivals, cultural events, conferences and weddings.

The building was designed in the Gothic Revival style and was a collaboration between Scottish architect James Gillespie Graham and English architect Augustus Pugin.

It is built of dark sandstone, which makes it appear older than its actual age; it was built between 1842 and 1845. Its spire is the highest point in Edinburgh, at 72m high.
