In the last half-timbered house on the left side in Goldstrasse in Quakenbrück
Hermann Bonnus was born in 1504 as the town's most important son.
It was built at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, and dendrochronological examination of the timber confirms this age. This means that the building is not only the birthplace of the reformer, but also one of the oldest known small-town houses in western Lower Saxony and possibly far beyond.
It can therefore be considered a monument of regional and even national importance in terms of both denominational and architectural history.
Between 2017 and 2021, the building was extensively renovated and converted into a museum-like memorial and explanatory site with a religious education and educational center. Some of the exhibits in the Hermann Bonnus Birthplace reflect the history of the town of Quakenbrück, where the Reformation, the Thirty Years' War and the subsequent bi-confessionalism - stronger and longer than anywhere else - have had an impact up to the recent past.
The Hermann Bonnus Birthplace also represents the path to a peaceful town society and contributes to this as a "place of peace" with a wide range of interdenominational and intercultural events and opportunities for encounters.

Opening times: Sundays 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (March to October).

Hermann Bonnus attended the Latin school in Quakenbrück, the cathedral school in Münster and became a student of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon in Wittenberg, whom he later held "in high esteem", as history tells us. Bonnus was involved in Luther's translation of the Bible into Low German. The Bonnus hand copy of this Bible, published in 1534, is owned by the parish of St. Sylvester.
