A city like Carnuntum with around 50,000 inhabitants needed two amphitheaters in its heyday. To compare: the next two larger towns, Hainburg and Bruck / Leitha, are about 15 km apart and together have only 13,600 inhabitants.

" The amphitheater of the civil city was located outside the ancient city walls and was built at the end of the 2nd century AD. The arena was surrounded on both sides of the gates by 25 meter wide stands that could accommodate around 13,000 visitors. Stairs and stair towers led to the higher ones lying tiers. A hexagonal basin built outside the southern passage made of reused building stones from the 4th century AD could be interpreted as a baptismal font, although this is not certain. At this point the amphitheater probably no longer served its actual purpose.

The discovery of the gladiator school about 800 m from the civilian city became a world sensation in 2011. It is internationally unique in its completeness and dimension and in terms of the clarity of the building structures it is only comparable to the Ludus Magnus of Rome. In 2014, parts of the gladiator school were uncovered during archaeological excavations and the associated training arena was then reconstructed at the original location. Walking time from the Roman quarter: approx. 10 minutes. "
