The church built between 1722 and 1725 in what was then the village of Jonitz was redesigned in a classical style under Prince Franz from 1816 on the basis of a garden pattern book. The newly erected tower with an obelisk at the top that can be seen from afar served as a focal point in the landscape. But it was also intended as a mausoleum for Prince Franz and his wife, who found their last resting place in the basement, in dark marble sarcophagi with white portrait medallions and rich sculptural decorations, in the middle of their garden kingdom.
