High above this village towers the ruins of a castle that was built here by William the Conqueror. During the English Civil War (1642-1651), Corfe Castle remained a royal stronghold for a long time, but in 1645 it was blown up by supporters of Parliament. From the adjoining garden of the National Trust's tearoom you can clearly see how crooked the robust walls and gates have become as a result of gunpowder explosions.

Corfe Castle stands above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck peninsula in the English county of Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates to the 11th century. It commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Wareham and Swanage. It was one of the earliest castles in England to be built at least partly using stone when the majority were built with earth and timber.
It was a Royalist stronghold in the English Civil War, falling to the Parliamentarians in 1645.
It is now owned by the National Trust and is pretty popular so can be pretty busy with around 250,000 visitors a year.
