On May 15, 1612, the first Friars Minor came to Venlo, where they temporarily settled in the old Sint-Jacobsgasthuis. In 1614, construction of its own accommodation was started on the grounds of the Hertogshof or Prinsenhof. The construction was made possible by financial support from the city and a donation from Archduke Albert and Duchess Isabella, who also donated part of the garden that belonged to their home (the Loohof). In 1616 the monastery building was finished and in 1620 the church belonging to the monastery.
