Legendary climb of the Milan-Sanremo, the Poggio features a couple of hairpin bends among the most famous in world cycling. Being quite narrow and far from hard, it is not uncommon for professionals (but also quite trained normal people) to have to brake on climbs, facing them. They are full of writings made by fans of the "Classicissima" and also enjoy a splendid view of the Ligurian coast.

The ascent to Poggio di Sanremo (160 m), colloquially referred to as “Poggio”, takes Via Duca D’Aosta and begins after drivers turn right off the wider Via Aurelia (SS1). Before the climb, the field of riders usually fights for position, as the field of riders stretches out on the narrow climb and gaps arise. With an average gradient of just 3.7%, the climb is relatively moderate and riders today cover the 3.7 kilometers at average speeds of over 35 km/h.[2] In the first two kilometers, the track has three tight hairpin bends in which the drivers have to brake and then accelerate. The average gradient in this section is over four percent before a short flat section follows. Around 500 meters before the highest point, the maximum incline of the ascent is reached at 8%. The distances that decide the race usually occur in this section. The summit is reached at the intersection with Via Grossi Bianchi, before returning to the SS1 via a technically demanding descent.
