The castle was built in 1777-1780 on behalf of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa by the imperial master builder Giuseppe Piermarini. It served first her son, the Governor-General of Lombardy, Archduke Ferdinand Charles of Austria-Este next to the residence in Milan as a country estate (1780-1796). Later it was, among other things, the main residence of the Napoleonic viceroy of Italy and together with the park a popular refuge of Italian kings from 1861. The Royal Villa of Monza, in neoclassical style, was built in Monza by the Habsburgs (as a private residence) during the Austrian domination of the 18th century and became the residence of the viceroy with the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy. Currently it hosts exhibitions, exhibitions and in one wing also the artistic high school of Monza.
