Strudel pots in the Chemnitz valley
Unusual rock formations, the so-called "strudel pots", immediately catch the eye on a trip through the Chemnitz Valley. They are unique for the whole of Germany.

The strudel pots (also called giant pots) are a geological feature of the region and cannot be overlooked on a walk along the Chemnitz in the Schweizerthal. They are unique in the area. Something comparable can only be found in Scandinavia or Switzerland.

These are rounded and mostly perforated stone blocks made of cordierite gneiss. These natural monuments fill the Chemnitz riverbed from Markersdorf to Mohsdorf. The giant blocks, which tumbled down the slopes around 9,000 years ago in an angular and misshapen manner, acquired their present form through the floods of the river, which were enormous at the end of the last ice age. They carried hard rocks with them, which the gneiss blocks had little to counter. Stones can often still be discovered in them, which the whirlpools drove into them in a helical groove or pierced them completely. On the opposite side of the boulders from the current, the sand has often carved deep scours in the stone.
Until the middle of the 19th century, our ancestors saw eerie beings and water spirits in the rock holes. They even took the largest of the blocks for the entrance to a mermaid's castle. Therefore they avoided this part of the Chemnitz valley.
