A pond with history. The former extinguishing pond for the city of Schwalenberg is located in the middle of the forest.
In the event of a fire, a drain could be opened and the pond water flowed into the "city water" about 100 meters below. It took the water a good 10 minutes to get to the fountain in the market and to be able to use it as additional extinguishing water.
Despite its function, the old extinguishing pond developed in a natural way. The crested newt was also drawn here from its traditional habitats in the Nieseaue. The body of water served as a stepping stone biotope for the unusual distribution up to the heights of the Mörth.
Holes in the dam and natural silting up caused the pond to last more than kaura
was a wild boar wallow. Through the desludging and sealing of the existing dam that took place in 2012, the pond will be secured for the future as a habitat for the great crested newt and its relatives, mountain newt and thread newt, as well as for common frogs and common toads.
