The original church was probably built on an old Sorbian-pagan cult site as a town and castle church, probably in the 12th or 13th century. Little is known of its early history.

In 1540 the church and a large part of the city burned down. A new church with two half-timbered towers was rebuilt on the foundations. This church burned down again in 1775. A large part of Triptis also lay in ruins. With great effort and thanks to generous donations from outside, the church was rebuilt between 1781 and 1784. This time, too, remains of the walls of the old building could be used, so that the late Gothic tabernacles have fortunately survived to this day, although they were walled up in the meantime and were only uncovered again during the last restoration. During this reconstruction in the 18th century, however, the church tower above the former choir extension was only restored up to just above the roof ridge with a so-called "lost tip". The tower was only completed in 1827 and the tower clock was installed in 1828.
