The Ernst Moritz Arndt Museum was built in 1936/37 and is the oldest museum on the island of Rügen. The museum's founder was Ernst Wiedemann (1883-1858), a teacher and cantor in Garz, a Rügen researcher, and publicist.

Since its inauguration, the museum has borne the name of the writer Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769-1860), who was born on the island of Rügen – in the neighboring village of Groß Schoritz.

The work and influence of this controversial political publicist provide ample material for a critical examination of literature and history.

Literary-inspired exhibitions also provide insights

into the cultural history of the town and the island of Rügen.

The Ernst Moritz Arndt Museum is the oldest museum on the island. It deals (also by the namesake) with literature, but also with history and this in connection with the island of Rügen. Built in 1936/1937, the building is definitely worth a visit. It has a great facade of colored bricks.
