The construction of the complex was started by Sultan Yıldırım Bayezid in 1390.
The Kulliye, which is considered one of the most perfect architectural works of Bursa, became an important education center of the period with its madrasah and hospital (darüşşifa) and drew the eastern border of the city. It is undoubtedly the most "complete" complex as it contains a mosque, madrasah, soup kitchen, hospital and bath. All the building units of the Kulliye were built in accordance with the topography of the place. Especially the water brought to the region before the construction of the complex also caused the settlement in the surrounding area to intensify.
The mosque inside the complex was built in the "⊥" plan type, like the mosques in the other Sultan Complexes, and it is the first example of the application in the architectural literature as the "Bursa Arch".
The tomb, which was built in 1406, contains the sarcophagus of the sultan's wife and a child. The Hospital (Darüşşifa) was recently rebuilt and currently serves as the Yıldırım Eye Center (Eye Foundation). The madrasah to the northwest of the mosque consists of 20 student rooms and a classroom. The most important feature is that it is the first Ottoman Madrasa with its front closed. The soup kitchen did not stand. However, the area where the soup kitchen is located today continues its public service due to the fact that a school was built on it. The complex gave its name to the neighborhood in which it is located.
It is located in the area declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
