The nature reserve "Auer Köpfle-Illinger Altrhein-Motherner Wörth" is the largest Altrhein area in the transition area between furcation and meander zones. In the furcation zone, the Ur-Rhine ran in a multitude of partly parallel, partly forked gullies in a network structure of shallow depth. In the meander zone, the gradient decreased. Land was removed at places with stronger currents and landed at places with weaker currents. This is how the typical river meanders developed, which formed veritable loops over a longer period of time. The result was a deep main stream with few side arms.

The nature reserve is located in the districts of the municipalities of Au am Rhein and Elchesheim-Illingen - covering an area of 285.5 hectares. The area extends to the west and east of the Illinger Altrhein with the Motherner Wörth and Auer Köpfle basins. The municipality of Mothern on the opposite side of the Rhine in Alsace, France, is not affected by the nature reserve.
