The cavalier house in the old town of Gifhorn was built in 1546 by master builder Michael Clare for the palace captain Caspar von Leipzig. It is the oldest building in Gifhorn after the castle.
The Kavalierhaus is located in the middle of the Gifhorn pedestrian area and is completely listed as a historical monument, including the garden. In the years 2009 and 2010, the building was completely renovated and shines in old splendor.
The first inhabitant Caspar von Leipzig was from 1539 to 1543 Schlosshauptmann and then as Hofmarschall for the Gifhorn Regent Duke Franz of Brunswick and Lüneburg.

"EMMA - museum apartment in the Kavalierhaus"

Behind the walls of the impressive sandstone facade in the style of the Weser Renaissance there are exhibition rooms and "EMMA - the museum apartment in the Kavalierhaus". Shown is the fully furnished apartment (middle-class home decor of the first half of the 20th century) of the last Cavalierhaus resident Emma Wrede. An interesting blog post on the house and the museum "Visiting the old lady in the cavalier house in Gifhorn" is published on the 17-city blog for Lower Saxony and Bremerhaven "aboutcities". Guided tours of the museum apartment are offered for groups.

The so-called Kavalierhaus is one of the most important buildings in Gifhorn in terms of architectural history. It was built in 1546 for a senior court official. The stone façade in the Renaissance style is unique among Gifhorn's town houses. The renowned castle and fortress builder Michale Clare worked here and was also responsible for the castle as an architect. A portal inside at the passage to a representative room and even the back of the building with its mighty oak framework aggressively showcase status and wealth. The vaulted cellar and the high attic, which are still largely original, also date from the construction period. Here you will find, among other things, an intact freight elevator wheel that was installed around 1700. The listed house was extensively renovated between 2008 and 2010 in accordance with listed building regulations. It is supported by the Kavalierhaus Community Foundation and, in addition to the museum, houses other cultural institutions.
