Etymologically, Leffinge comes from 'Latfin-inga' (the settlement of Latfin). In all likelihood, Leffinge originated somewhere between the 5th and 7th centuries, when a group of free farmers, led by a certain Latfin, settled on the back of a silted tidal channel in the then salt marsh landscape. There they built a circular village on a mound.
