If you hike over the harrow, you will see where the European long-distance hiking trail X1 E1 (Eggeweg) and the circular hiking trail Höxter-Nord, also called "Hildesheimer Weg", intersect, a crossroads with a seating group. An old tradition tells that here at the time of the Thirty Years' War, a charcoal burner was murdered in agonizing ways. In order to pay his debts, he burnt charcoal here for the Altenbekener Eisenhütte. One night a group of Hessian Marauders attacked him, plundered him, stabbed him on wooden logs in a cruciform shape and placed them in a smoking kiln. A few days later, forest workers are said to have found the charcoal charred as a "black cross". At that time pious people built a wooden cross, which decayed over the years. It gives the forest area since that time also the name "black cross".

Black cross on the harrow is a cast iron cross that was erected in 1922 as the "Ullner cross". The Black Cross is also the name for the entire forest area near Altenbeken, i.e. the part of the forest area around the Black Cross.

There is an interesting legend about the Black Cross. There was once a charcoal burner who lived there. This was plundered by a group of marauders from the Thirty Years' War, then fed on wooden logs in a cross shape and placed in a smoking kiln. And so the next day the arms were found charred into a black cross. Since then, the forest area has been called the Black Cross.
