    The Zwischenahn Sea

    The Zwischenahner Meer is also known as the "Pearl of the Ammerland" - and rightly so. Embedded in a beautiful natural landscape, the third largest inland lake in Lower Saxony is a popular destination for guests from near and far. 550 hectares of lake area are also an Eldorado for water sports enthusiasts. Incidentally, the lake has a depth of up to 5.50 meters; underneath, however, there is usually a meter-thick layer of digested sludge.

    Our sea is ALWAYS there!

    The term "sea" is based on North German language - that's what it's called "North Sea" although in "normal" German usage it would have to be called "sea"!

    An ideal water sports area
    Water sports enthusiasts are happy about their attractive area, although motor boats are strictly forbidden on the lake. To sail on the lake, proof of a registration plaque is required, which in turn requires a fixed berth.

      The Z Zwischenahner Meer is a lake in the municipality of Bad Zwischenahn in the Ammerland district in Lower Saxony. It lies between the main town of Bad Zwischenahn in the south and the district of Dreibergen in the north. The lake is also known as the Pearl of the Ammerland. The name Zwischenahner Meer only became established at the beginning of the 19th century; before that, the lake was called “Elmendorfer” or “Ammersches Meer”.

        The Zwischenahner Meer is located above a salt dome as a remnant of the Zechstein Sea from the Permian period around 250 million years ago. It was created when groundwater-related salt leaching led to a collapse of the salt dome and the overlying overburden. The Zwischenahner Meer was formed in the cavity created in this way. Further examples of bodies of water created by sinkholes include the Sager Meer, the Maujahn Moor, the Arendsee and the Seeburger See. These lakes are characterized by a great depth in relation to their diameter. However, the Zwischenahner Meer is quite shallow and appears rather atypical. However, steeper edges can be found on the Zwischenahner and Rostrup banks. However, they are heavily blurred by the thick layer of sludge.

        In 1949, drilling was carried out to detect a salt dome, the result of which was a map with the location of the salt dome located under the lake.
