The bridge does not have a real bike path. We drive, wedged between the railing and the trucks and cars (70km/h). It is not a safe route for cyclists with heavy luggage, children or trailers.
We read everywhere that there is a track and a sidewalk on this bridge. Don't trust it, it's absolutely false...

Fort Louvois is a 17th century maritime fortification, built on a rock submerged at high tide, between the Ile d'Oléron and the Marennes basin. Its construction, decided by Louvois, Minister of War of Louis XIV, was carried out from 1691 to 1694 according to the plans of Vauban. The objective is to cross cannon fire with the Citadel of Oléron to defend the maritime arsenal of Rochefort. Designed in the shape of a horseshoe, with a central keep protected by a drawbridge and a moat, it is reminiscent of medieval castles. Today, Fort Louvois opens its doors to you for an unusual and surprising visit! In the keep, a new scenography provides the keys to understanding the history of the fort. A relief map shows the coastal fortifications, from the Gironde to the Charente. At the top of the tower, orientation tables complete the panoramic view of the Coureau d'Oléron. Within the enclosure, discover the six barracks (where the garrison lives), the 24-pounder cannons and the powder magazine.

Nice view of the viaduct. In the middle of the bridge we are the closest to see the fort in the sea.

Be careful with cyclists, taking the Ile d'Oleron bridge like the bridge over the Seudre is very dangerous, especially in the event of wind.
It is much preferable to favor smuggler boats which for 3 euros allow secure passage
